WordPress Web Design Top Tips. Step 2. Installing WordPress
No. 2 Installing WordPress
This next step very much ties into the first of selecting a good WordPress hosting plan. A good WordPress hosting plan will make the installation of WordPress very easy for you. As easy as clicking a button, if not easier. Make sure that you have read my first blog post in this series, a great hosting plan, to ensure that your host meets WordPress hosting requirements.
Step 1 complete, you are setup with your WordPress hosting plan.
Step 2. Make sure you know how to log into your account / admin area with your WordPress host. Your host should send you details on how to do this. A good WordPress hosting company will have an administrative area that allows you to click a button or a link that says ‘Install WordPress’ or similar, so ask your host for the simple instructions to reach your WordPress installation area in your account admin. Yes, installing WordPress can be that easy. Using this method, WordPress will be installed on your host server and accessible to you for design and development. It’s brilliant online design and development. You can access your site and work on it from any computer that has internet access. Love WordPress.
Install the Latest Version of WordPress
Take time to clarify that you are installing the latest version of WordPress. You will always have to upgrade WordPress as you mature on the WordPress platform and indeed it’s a great thing and completely necessary. It may entail upgrading your theme too and plugins. So let’s get up to date from the initial installation. I will talk in more detail about themes and plugins in later posts.
Once WordPress is installed, your WordPress Dashboard will give you a message informing you when it is time to run a WordPress update. Thank you WordPress. These one click updates are nice, but again be aware it may throw your theme off and whole website too if your theme requires an update. Do your research with your theme designer if you have the option, you may have to put a little time aside to upgrade your theme or essential plugins too. Don’t let this put you off upgrading though, it’s essential to upgrade.
Some really super WordPress hosting companies will actually set you up an account in which WordPress is already installed for you. Now that is nice, especially when you are starting out in WordPress and want to go straight to designing and developing your website. siteground.com and wpengine.com are examples of such companies.
During the installation process you will be asked to create a WordPress account with a username and password. In addition the opportunity to name the folder / directory that holds the WordPress installation. Welcome to WordPress 🙂
Logging Into Your Dashboard
Once your installation is complete your can login to the WordPress Dashboard. Your Dashboard is the area that contains all the controls, bells and whistles that you can use to design your website. To login: type your domain name in your browser URL bar followed by /wp-admin.
This will take you to your login screen where you can enter your username and password. Contact your host if necessary to get your login info. Once logged in, you get to setup your own Users and Passwords under the Users title on the left-hand side. Make sure you change passwords frequently to keep your site secure.
Almost ready for the next step now. Do you have an ftp client you can use?
